Everything You Need to Know About J. Cole

Jermaine Lamar Cole professionally known by his stage name J Cole Is an American American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer born on January 28, 1985, on a military base in Frank Hurst, West Germany but raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he was Raised by a single mother in a household of him and his brother Zach Cole.

Cole began rapping at the age of twelve and decided to take it up as a career path in the year 2000 after his mother purchased him an ASR-X music sampler as a Christmas gift to him after he long asked her for one. During this time Cole sorely focus on improving his production skills which he later turned into a producer who underwent by the pseudonym The Therapist. He used the pseudonym of the therapist to collaborate with the local group Bomm Sheltuh where Cole or rather The Therapist was rapping and producing as a member of the group.

Upon graduating high school with a 4.2 GPA, Cole decided that his chances of securing a recording contract would be better in New York City. He moved there and accepted a scholarship to St. John’s University. Initially majoring in computer science, Cole later switched to communications after witnessing the life of a lonely computer science professor. 

At the college, Cole was the president of Haraya, a pan-African student coalition.  He graduated magna cum laude in 2007, with a 3.8 GPA. Despite graduating, Cole would officially receive his degree during a homecoming concert in 2015, revealing that he had owed money for a library book, causing the university to hold back from granting him his degree.

Musical Career – Cole was musically inspired by now-fellow rappers Canibus, Nas, Tupac, and Eminem, Cole and his cousin worked on developing their basic understanding of the wordplay used in Rhyming As they began to learn how to interpolate storytelling within their lyrics which later turned to make J cole one of the greatest to ever touch the mic.

Cole later expanded his production to create an entire CD’s worth of instrumentals, and traveled to Roc the Mic Studio, hoping to play it for Jay Z while he was in recording sessions for American Gangster. Cole waited for over three hours, before being dismissed by Jay Z. Cole later used the CD as the backdrop for his debut mixtape, The Come Up.

The Come Up put J Cole on Jay-Z’s Radar whereby he later became the first signee under Jay-Z’s Label Roc Nation. J Cole featured in a couple of Jay-Z’s songs where he grew exponentially and ventured out on his own. His biggest Studio album is 2014 Forest Hills Drive, named after the address of his childhood home which was seized from his mother when she was unable to pay rent. J Cole bought the house back and now lets Homeless people stay there rent-free.

J Cole went on and left Roc Nation to begin his own record label ‘ Dreamville ‘ where he has various talented artists signed under him such as J.I.D, Bas, and Lute.
