How to get rid of bad-smelling car interiors

bad-smelling car interiors

Having a clean and odour-free car cabin is crucial to ensure a distraction-free drive besides maintaining hygiene.

Often, car owners indulge in the bad practice of eating, smoking inside the car, which often leaves behind spill and stain marks, along with bad smell to deal with. Here, we will list out a few steps to prevent bad smells inside the cabin and ensure a pleasant smell.

1. Regularly clean your car

One of the most effective ways to keep your car smelling fresh is to maintain cleanliness. Vacuum the carpets and upholstery to remove dirt, dust, and debris that can cause odours. Wipe down the surfaces with a mild cleaner to eliminate any spills or stains.

Avoid letting trash accumulate in your car. Dispose of any garbage or food wrappers immediately to prevent unpleasant odours from developing.

2. Use baking soda

Baking soda is a natural odour absorber and can help eliminate unwanted smells in your car. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpets and upholstery, let it sit for a few hours, and then vacuum it up.

3. Ventilate your car regularly

Open the windows or sunroof to allow fresh air to circulate through your car. This helps to remove stale odours and allows for better ventilation. Run your fans at full capacity while doing this for better results.

4. Use natural air fresheners

Instead of using artificial air fresheners that contain chemicals, opt for natural alternatives. Place a small bowl of activated charcoal or coffee beans in your car to absorb odours. You can also hang a bag filled with camphor.

5. Avoid smoking in the car

Smoking in your car can leave a strong, lingering odour. If you’re a smoker, try to refrain from smoking in the car, or at least roll down the windows while doing so.

6. Dry out wet items

If you accidentally spill water or any liquid in your car, clean it up immediately and dry out the affected area. Moisture can lead to mold and mildew, resulting in unpleasant smells.

7. Use natural deodorisers

Essential oils can be used as natural deodorisers. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a cotton ball or a small piece of cloth and place it in the car. Refresh the scent as needed.

8. Regular maintenance

Keeping up with regular car maintenance, such as oil changes and inspections, can help prevent mechanical issues that could lead to unpleasant smells in the cabin.
